A guide to OS-HELP Loans

What is an OS-HELP loan?

OS-HELP, an acronym for Overseas Higher Education Loan Program, is an educational loan available to students enrolled in a Commonwealth supported location. The loan allows you to undertake some of your studies overseas, using the funds towards airfare, accommodation, and other related expenses on the condition that you’re studying in Australia at an approved educational provider.

How much can you get?

You can borrow a maximum of $9,063 AUD (correct as of Jan 2018). The amount you are awarded will depend on where you’re travelling to and whether you’ll be learning a second language among other things (Full details can be found on the Study Assist website linked at the end of the page).

Who is eligible?

Work the World placements are an accepted form of study with regards to OS-HELP Loan eligibility, however, you should check with your educational provider to find out what kinds of overseas study experience you are allowed to take as part of your course before submitting an application.

Below are examples of eligibility criteria:

  • You must be approved by your educational body to receive the loan, and again, information on the application process is available through your institution
  • You are an Australian citizen, or hold a permanent humanitarian visa or a New Zealand Special Category Visa, and also meet the long-term residency requirements
  • You have not received this type of loan on more than one other occasion
  • You will be undertaking study overseas that counts towards the course requirements for the Australian course of study in which you are enrolled

How do I apply?

You need to apply directly through your university. Each participating university has its own application and selection process, so the best thing to do is to get in touch with the relevant administration.
