My placement was in Accident and Emergency for 3 weeks, which was an unbelievable experience. My supervisor was phenomenal - an amazing teacher. I saw many things I will never forget, and which have forever left an impact on the way I will practice medicine in the future, both at home and abroad.

I spent a week in the Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) clinic. This was very interesting and I got to take part in weighing the babies, taking mothers blood pressures and also giving vaccinations.

My elective placement in Ghana was the best experience of my life. It has opened my eyes to an entirely different way of life and I have so many memories and made so many friends that I will never forget.

During the four weeks I tried surfing, white water rafting, safari in a national park

Culture was also evident in the day to day running of the general hospital, as although there are similarities between UK nursing and Sri Lankan nursing there were also differences. For example, instead of just doing IV’s for your patients, you had one nurse doing all of the IV’s.
