Griffith University 2025
Sometimes we realise that if we don’t go now, we may never get another chance. This unique opportunity inspired me to undertake a medical elective in Nepal.
I initially chose to complete my placement with Work the World because of the support they offered and the convenience of not needing to plan and organise accommodation, placement, and meals. Work the World goes above and beyond in all these areas.
The Work the World house has a comfortable, bunk-bed, shared bathroom style of living. The common areas and rooftop provide great spaces to relax with others from the house.
Living with other healthcare students has been a fantastic way to share placement experiences and network with peers from around Australia and the rest of the world. We have also been able to explore Kathmandu and other wonderful parts of Nepal as a group.
The in-country team is simply amazing, and easily the best part of the house. Being greeted by friendly security, enjoying fantastic meals cooked by MD in the kitchen, and having an always clean house has made my experience fantastic. Sean and Samichhya are also fantastic; they go above and beyond to provide support and local recommendations.
The main differences between healthcare systems are driven by significantly fewer resources compared to what I am used to, as well as cultural differences. Ideas around patient autonomy and confidentiality differ greatly, with much decision-making taking place between doctors and the patient’s family. Naturally, as healthcare is not free, financial barriers are also evident.
Evenings and weekends have been a great opportunity to explore Pokhara, Kathmandu itself, and surrounding areas such as Bhaktapur. Doctors and staff at the hospital all recommend exploring the cultural and scenic sights Nepal offers.
After our first day of placement, we were invited to play a game of cricket with some of the allied health staff - this is one aspect of my experience that I will always remember.
