Katerina, a nursing student from Bournemouth University, recently completed her placement with us in the Philippines. “I was inspired to undertake an overseas elective placement in the Philippines because I wanted to experience a different healthcare system, broaden my clinical knowledge, and develop both personally and professionally. “My first impression of the hospital was that it was extremely busy, with a high volume of patients and healthcare professionals working under significant pressure. Compared with hospitals in the UK, there appeared to be fewer resources and equipment available, which meant staff had to be resourceful and make the best use of what they had. “Despite these challenges, I was impressed by the dedication, resilience, and teamwork demonstrated by the nurses and doctors. Everyone was very welcoming, and I quickly realised that patient care relied heavily on effective communication, teamwork, and clinical judgement. “My placement allowed me to develop a wide range of clinical knowledge and practical skills across several departments. “One of the most memorable aspects of my placement was observing the wide variety of cases across different clinical areas. In the emergency department, I witnessed the rapid management of trauma patients and medical emergencies, highlighting the importance of teamwork and quick decision-making. “Although it can be challenging at times, the experience is incredibly rewarding and has strengthened my passion for nursing and my confidence in caring for patients from diverse backgrounds. “My elective placement in the Philippines was one of the most rewarding experiences of my nursing education. “It challenged me to think differently, adapt to new situations, and appreciate the resilience of healthcare professionals working in resource-limited environments. Jennifer, a nursing student from Nottingham Trent University, recently completed her placement with us in Vietnam. “As soon as I started my nursing degree, I knew I wanted to do an overseas elective placement, and I needed some solo travel in my life! My placement in Huê really opened my eyes to the differences in practice and conditions. It made me more grateful for what we have in the UK, despite the NHS challenges.” “The staff were fantastic and so kind and welcoming, and it was so lovely to learn from each other, where they taught me their nursing routines and skills, and I was able to teach them English and learn cultural and practice differences from each other.” “I was lucky to see births and look after newborn babies. I particularly enjoyed washing and cuddling the babies and learning about maternity care in Vietnam. I really enjoyed getting to know and spending time with the housemates - it was like a second family.” “We all got along so well, and we were able to share experiences on placement and hang out in the evening, whether relaxing in the house, around the pool at lunchtime, or going out in the evenings for shopping, enjoying local bars and restaurants and meeting locals and fellow tourists from all over the world!” “My advice to others who are considering an overseas placement is to go for it!
