The Work the World House
The Work the World house is a big part of your experience in Indonesia, and will quickly become your home away from home. You’ll live with healthcare students and graduates from all over the world, and that gives the house a lively vibe.
The house in Yogyakarta is the perfect place for you to kick-back after a day on the wards. The big living areas are great for socialising, but there’s still lots of space for when you want time to yourself.
The house is in a friendly suburb, and from there you can jump in a Grab taxi (the local Uber equivalent) and get anywhere in the city.
Go shopping for colourful batik on Malioboro Street, grab some street food in the alun-alun (local square), and join the locals as they ride neon-lit ‘bling-bling cars’ around the park after dark.
Management team: Based in the house, they oversee your entire Work the World experience — 24/7 — from the moment you land to the moment you leaveCatering team: Cook a variety of both local cuisine and familiar home comforts, accommodating all dietary requirementsHousekeeper: Keeps the house clean and tidy from top to bottom, making sure you're comfortableLanguage teacher: Visits the house twice per-week. During their lessons, you’ll learn everyday phrases and clinical terminology to help you get more from your placementSecurity team: Monitor the house 24/7 for your peace of mind
Support in the Hospital
Before you start your placement, your in-country team will take you to your placement hospital for a visit. They’ll introduce you to department staff (including your key supervisor) and this helps you settle in. In actual fact, you’ll see the in-country team in the hospital all the time — they visit you on placement to make sure you’re supported.
We assign your supervisors before your placement starts. Your aim is to build a relationship with them so you can see the local healthcare system through their experienced eyes.
We’ve got all the bases covered, offering your support all the way through your placement.
Our programs are open (Yogyakarta opening 2023)! You can book your Work the World overseas placement with total confidence. Once you’ve secured your space, you can make unlimited changes to your travel dates, absolutely free.

Village Healthcare Week
During your placement in Yogyakarta, you’ll experience all the ins and outs of a city-based placement. But to see how the healthcare system holds up out in rural Indonesia, you need to undertake this optional (and eye-opening) additional week. You’ll head out with your personal Work the World guide and interpreter to spend a week living in a traditional Indonesian village community.
In the mornings, you’ll head to the local clinic to learn how local healthcare staff have learned how to get around a severe lack of resources. Your afternoons are filled with cultural activities that immerse you in the rural way of life, like learning to cook classic Indonesian dishes and creating your own traditional ‘batik’ print.
